In a recent communication dated March 14, 2014, Dr. Pierson informed the Darien school community that the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) delayed the start date of the Field Test from March 18 to March 25, 2014.   As a result of this change, it is necessary to modify the grade level testing windows for students in Grades 3-8 and 11 as follows:

Elementary Schools

Grade 5           March 25 - April 9* - note extension of window

Grade 3           April 22 - May 7

Grade 4           May 12 - May 30

Darien High School

Grade 11         May 20 - May 30

Middlesex Middle School

Grade 7           March 25 - April 2

Grade 8           April 4 - April 24

Grade 6           April 28 - May 6

The schedule change at the middle school is due to conflicts with previously scheduled grade level activities.   At the high school, the schedule change allows for the completion of the third quarter without disruption and will support our students and staff as they prepare for AP and SAT exams.

I appreciate your patience and understanding as we make the necessary adjustments to this process.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact my office (Phone: 203-656-7414; Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ).

postheadericon IMPORTANT - Message from Interim Superintendent Pierson – Rescheduling of Smarter Balanced Field Test

Dear Parents,

At 11:00 am this morning (Friday, March 14, 2014) all Connecticut Superintendents of Schools were informed via conference call from the Commissioner of Education, Mr. Stefan Pryor, that the Smarted Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) has delayed the start date for administration of the SBAC Field Test from March 18th to March 25th.  We were informed that SBAC made this decision late last evening based on the need to ensure proper administration of the Field Test on a national basis.

This change in start date WILL have an impact on our established testing calendars for Field Test administration in our schools.  The degree and extent of that impact is currently being determined by Mr. Canty and other staff who are responsible for the implementation of this assessment process.  We anticipate that we will have a modified testing calendar for Field Test administration for all levels established no later than Monday, March 17th.  Obviously, we are seeking to establish a revised schedule that will have the least impact on our students and schools. This new schedule will be communicated as soon as it is finalized and our staff is working non-stop to accommodate this unexpected change of plans.  Of particular concern is the SBAC test window for Darien High School, given the established schedule for students taking AP and SAT exams.  Principal Dunn and her staff are making every effort to resolve this situation prior to the end of today so that DHS staff, students and parents can be informed.

Despite this unanticipated news, I am confident that we will effectively modify our plans for administration of the Field Test in a manner that will be in the best interests of our students.

Best regards,

Lynne B. Pierson, Ed.D.
