Board of Education Policies
Full policy books may be examined at the Darien Public Schools’ District Office and the Darien Public Library. However, during the period of years from 2008-2011 the Board of Education is conducting a comprehensive review and revision of its entire policy book. Old policy statements are being rescinded and simultaneously updated new policy statements are being adopted. As this work is taking place, the newly adopted policies are now posted electronically to this website. The following is a synopsis of the progress of the Board of Education’s work.
One of the most important responsibilities of the Board of Education is to prepare and adopt policies that govern the operations of the Darien Public Schools. There currently exist well over one hundred such policies. During the 2008-09 school year the Policy Committee of the Board and Administration, with the advice of legal counsel, have begun the process of updating and revising the district’s policies. On December 9, 2008 the Board of Education rescinded sections A: Foundations and Basic Commitments; B: Governance and Operations of the Board of Education; and C: Administration. At the same time, the Board approved the following new policies listed below: Series 9000 which includes Legal Status and Organization of the Board, Board Meetings, Board Policies and Operations and Series 2000, Administration, which includes Goals of Administrative Body, the Superintendent of Schools, Administrative Team, etc.
On June 9, 2009, the Board of Education rescinded the following policies: Section I, Students; DE6, Income from Student Fund Raising Activities, HG3.4, Student Fund Raising Activities, EH1, Electronic Environment Regulations, EE1, Student Transportation, EE1.1, Walkers and Riders, EE1.2, Operation of Buses on Private Roads, EE1.3, School Bus Safety Program, and EE1.4, Transportation Safety Complaints. At the same time, the Board approved the following new policies: Series 5000, Students; and Reports of Suspected Abuse or Neglect of Children, Personnel section (former Policy ID5 in the “Student” section).
In addition, a “Personnel” policy entitled “Employee Use of District Computer Systems” was approved by the Board on July 28, 2009.
