ALP was created to provide an effective learning environment
for students who want or need a different academic model. Our classes are
smaller, less formal, and modified to engage students in more active learning.
We also give a wide range of assessments to more accurately measure what our
students understand and can do.
The ALP English classes follow the regular education sequence
for grades 9-11: English 9, English 10, and American Literature at the
appropriate levels for the students. Seniors take the World Literature Seminar
first, and then a semester of Contemporary Fiction. This sequence meets all DHS
graduation requirements, and prepares students for both academic and real-world
reading, writing, and presentation skills.
Writer’s Workshop is also offered as an elective.
The ALP Social Studies classes follow the regular education
sequence for grades 9-12: Western Civilization, World Studies, American
History, and Law & Government are all taught at the appropriate levels for
the students. Seniors also take an elective history class second semester
called
At the current time, ALP does not have a math teacher as part
of our team.
The ALP Science class is a semester-long elective lab science
that fulfills the DHS Science requirement and may be repeated for credit.
Emphasis is placed on the scientific method, current topics in science,
building on the prior knowledge and interests of the students, and deepening
their understanding of the skills and techniques of scientists in a variety of
fields. Previous offerings have included Marine Biology, Botany, Physics, Human
Physiology, and Genetics.
Participation in the ALP gym class is mandatory for all
students. Although the group is not required to change for gym (with the exception
of appropriate footwear), the classes are run by PE staff along the regular
quarter-by-quarter rotating sport sequence. Health curriculum is provided
throughout the year by the inclusion of nutrition and dietary information,
mental and physical health topics, alcohol and drug awareness, and
character-based advocacy instruction, all of which are delivered during the ALP
gym class or community meetings.
