DARIEN HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2008
GRADUATION CEREMONY EXPECTATIONS

Graduation from high school is an event that comes once in a lifetime. The Class of 2008 deserves a graduation ceremony that will be dignified and memorable, as do their parents, relatives and friends.

It is expected that you will act in a mature manner during the graduation ceremony. Any behavior which draws attention to you or detracts from the dignity of the ceremony will result in your exclusion from the ceremony. The inappropriate or foolish behavior of one student can mar the ceremony and all it means for fellow classmates and their guests.

Therefore, in seeking to ensure that all will enjoy the ceremony, and that you know what is required of you, we ask you to abide by the following code of expectations. Failure to sign and comply will result in non-participation in the ceremony.

GRADUATION EXPECTATIONS

1. Students are not to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. You will be removed from the graduation ceremony if you are found to be under the influence of either.

2. Disruptive behavior during the ceremony will result in your exclusion from the remainder of the ceremony.

3. All students must dress in a manner appropriate to a ceremonial occasion. Students will be sent home to change if their attire is not appropriate. The following guidelines apply:

• Students should select clothing and shoes customarily worn at formal occasions. Tee-shirts, shorts, jeans, or informal attire are not allowed. Proper footwear must be worn, not sneakers or flip-flops. High-heeled or spike heeled shoes should not be worn on the stadium turf field.

• Gentlemen should wear a collared shirt and tie and nice trousers under their blue gowns. Ladies wear white gowns, so should select a light colored dress or slacks to wear under theirs.

• No individual variation or decorations of the cap and gown may be worn or displayed. Only one tassel may be worn during the graduation ceremony. All students will receive a DHS 2008 blue and white tassel to wear. Members of the National Honor Society who also receive a gold tassel and/or Tri-M Society members who receive a pink tassel must choose only one tassel to wear during the ceremony.

• Nothing, including water bottles, may be carried into the graduation ceremony. Items brought to the South Gym for robing must be left behind until after the ceremony (this includes purses, cell phones, cameras, etc.), so it is best not to bring anything with you. Cold water bottles will be provided at each student’s seat on the stadium field.

Each senior will sign a Graduation Ceremony Expectations Agreement at the first graduation rehearsal.  A copy of this agreement will be mailed home so everyone can be aware of our expectations.  Do not return this copy but keep it as a reference to review with the graduating senior. Seniors should understand that a violation of any one of these expectations may result in exclusion from the graduation ceremony.

Graduation Rehearsals

Graduation rehearsals will be held on TBA

Seniors should assemble in the Auditorium.  Each senior will sign a Graduation Ceremony Expectations Agreement at the first rehearsal.
A copy of this agreement has been mailed home so everyone can be aware of our expectations.
Do not return this copy
but keep it as a reference to review with the graduating senior.

Please be advised that walking on the Stadium Field will be difficult in high heels.  Please keep your safety in mind when choosing footwear for the graduation ceremony.  Any type of spike heel should be avoided.  All students should refer to the ceremony agreement for graduation attire guidelines.

Caps And Gowns

Payment for a cap and gown is $25.00 and is payable by cash or check made out to Darien High School. Students will pay for their cap and gown when they pick it up beginning after the first graduation rehearsal on Tuesday, and on Wednesday during non-rehearsal hours in the lobby area outside the Main Office.

Please note that students will not receive caps and gowns until all school obligations are met and they are cleared from the Blue List. Students should return all books, athletic equipment, and pay all library and cafeteria fees before Friday, June 13th. Rain tickets will be distributed with the caps and gowns. The cap and gown is the student’s to keep after the ceremony as a souvenir of graduation.

2008 GRADUATION CEREMONY

Graduation is Wednesday, June 18 at 5:00 p.m. - DHS Stadium Field -
No tickets are needed if the ceremony is held on the stadium field.

Gates will open at 4:00 p.m. and seats are first-come, first-served. Seats may not be reserved on the field earlier in the day before the ceremony.  All seats on the field (and bleachers) have excellent viewing as the stage is elevated for all to see.

Ample field level seating is available for people who do not wish to climb the bleachers.
If you have special needs please contact Assistant Principal Donna Russo to make further arrangements.

The graduation ceremony should be joyful, yet dignified.  Loud or lengthy demonstrations of exuberance for one graduate may distract from the attention that the next graduate deserves.  Spectators are asked to exercise restraint during the ceremony.

Graduating students will not be allowed to carry objects onto the stadium field. This includes water bottles, cell phones, cameras, beach balls etc. Students should leave these objects with the families before the ceremony or they can leave them unsupervised in the gym. Water will be provided to each student during the ceremony.

Please note that all graduates will receive an empty diploma case. Graduates must pick-up their name specific diplomas after graduation in the Wrestling Room.

Inclement Weather

If we experience inclement weather, graduation will be held in the Darien High School Auditorium and seating will be by ticket only.
Each senior will be limited to FOUR Auditorium rain tickets.
The ceremony will be simulcast in the Main Gym and additional overflow seating will be available there.

Reception for all Graduates

There will be a reception for all graduates, their families and other guests in the Main Cafeteria immediately following the ceremony.  Graduates should pick up their diploma inserts after the ceremony in the Wrestling Room (room C-006, across from the Fitness Center).

Traffic and Parking for Graduation

Traffic and parking for graduation will be controlled by the Darien Police Department.  All traffic will enter via Noroton Avenue and be directed where to park by police and our campus monitors.  High School Lane and Nutmeg Lane will be closed to traffic before the ceremony.  Parking will be extremely tight, so we request graduating seniors not drive to the ceremony.  Seniors should be dropped off by 4 p.m. at the circle outside the Main Gym opposite the tennis courts and report to the North and South Gyms. Handicapped parking spaces will be located near the stadium field.  Please let a traffic officer know if you need to park there and you will be directed how to proceed.
