(NOTE: Text shown in bold shows changes to the original policy proposed in April, 2003; while text shown in bold italics indicates changes proposed from the meeting of the Board’s Policy Committee on September 18 and Board Meeting on Sept. 23, 2003).

Formal publications in printed, electronic, or video formats, issued by and in the name of the schools, shall reflect the high standards  and aspirations of the Darien Public Schools community, shall comply with all legal requirements, and shall not violate the rights of any person.  The exercise of appropriate economy and good judgment in materials and production is expected, and compliance with the standards above is required.

In addition, the Board supports the regular distribution by each school of printed materials, the use of web pages to publicize activities, and the broadcasting of video tapes featuring the activities and programs of the schools to all district parents and interested citizens.  All materials distributed, posted or broadcast by a school, must be approved by the principal before dissemination.  All materials distributed to an audience wider than that of a single school must be approved by the Superintendent or his/her designee.

The Superintendent of Schools shall develop administrative procedures to ensure that all printed, electronic, or video materials that are distributed, posted, or broadcast are properly reviewed to assure compliance with this policy.
