General Information
The library maintains a collection of over 40,000 volumes and AV materials indexed by the public access catalog. Our subscriptions to periodicals, many of which are on microfiche, exceed 200 and are indexed by the Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature, Infotrac and Proquest Platinum which is a full-text internet based database of newspapers and magazines. Users may print out or email articles from school as well as access the database from remote locations. Our extensive reference collection is designed to meet the needs of each department’s curriculum.
The high school library uses Follett’s Catalog Plus to manage the collection. The computerized circulation system allows us to easily identify books that are in circulation and place a reserve on them. This system is integrated with a computerized card catalog that allows patrons to search for library materials electronically. It may also be accessed online.
The library is committed to supporting education through student and teacher services. If there is something that you require that isn’t listed here, please speak to us. We’ll do our best to serve you.
Borrowing
All materials in the library are available for circulation. Due dates vary according to the type of material. Overdue reminders will be distributed regularly through homerooms. Magazines, reserve materials and reference books may be checked out overnight. Fines for these items are $2.00/day because they must be available for student use during the school day. Videos and CDs circulate for one week with fines of $.25/day. Regular books circulate for two weeks and have late fines of $.10/day. All items may be renewed if no reserve has been made.
Items placed on reserve for class use will be behind the circulation desk. They may be signed out for use for one period or checked out at the end of the day for return the following morning.
Behavior
The library is a place for quiet work. Students who wish to socialize should use the cafeteria. The library is governed by a simple rule: Be considerate of others. Students may talk quietly while working in the open area but must maintain silence in the areas reserved for silent work.
Selection Assistance
The librarians will be glad to provide assistance with selection of books for assignments and for leisure reading. We also have bibliographies available on specific topics. Please be as specific as possible in identifying your requests.
Audio-Visual Services
The AV Department schedules for use of AV equipment for the school. Production services include video taping of school events, off-the-air taping of educational television, slide production and providing transparency materials. Catalogs are available for film and video location and ordering. Our video production course takes precedence for use of the editing room and studio. All others should make reservations for the editing lab well in advance. Students interested in working on programs for cable access should speak to a library teacher. We broadcast on channel 78 in Darien.
Computers
The library has various computers and word processing software available for use in doing school projects. Librarians will be happy to assist you.
Book Ordering
We welcome your suggestions for books to add to the library collection. Books are ordered throughout the year as needed. Some requests can be filled in a few days while others may take some time. It is important to make your requests as early as possible. Please see a library teacher about your requests.
Internet
The library has many computers with internet connections that are available for students to use in researching curriculum related projects. They are not to be used for personal shopping, games or auction sites. The internet should be used responsibly according to the district’s Acceptable Use Policy. Any improper use of any of the library’s computers may result in loss of computer privileges.
Additional Services
School supplies such as pens, pencils, notebooks, index cards, hi-liters, 3.5" and CDR disks, stamps, folders and report covers may be purchased at the circulation desk. There is a coin-operated copier located behind the circulation desk as well as free microfiche reader printers. If there are other services that you require, please ask a library teacher.
Inter-Library Loans
The library belongs to the Connecticut Library Network which shares resources through project reQuest, an online catalog which allows us to locate materials all over the state. Available through the internet, reQuest allows you to send your own inter-library requests. Please see a library teacher for instructions.
