		BACH TO THE FUTURE The Darien Music Department Curricular Focus During the 2011-2012 school year, the Music Department of the Darien Public Schools will be engaged in curriculum-based projects that will focus on study of the life and music of one of the most prolific composers the world has ever seen, Johann Sebastian Bach. The teachers in the Darien Music Department will devote Professional Development time and resources to learning more about historical and cultural perspective, performance practices of Bach’s music and will develop teaching strategies to deliver instruction and musical experiences to our students that will engage them in the music of J.S. Bach and the Baroque period (1600-1750). Our ultimate goal is that all of the students in the Darien Public Schools (K-12) will experience music associated with the life and music of J.S. Bach in meaningful musical activities that lead them toward a deeper understanding of the culture and the history and music of the period. Our ongoing collaboration with the Darien Music for Youth Foundation will provide opportunities for live musical performances in the schools and the library/media centers throughout the district will assist with providing resources to classroom teachers. This project will offer opportunities that encourage interdisciplinary connections, multiple collaborations among teachers of all content areas and will create meaningful, life-long learning experiences for all of the students in the Darien Public Schools.
