Canstruction creation shines at state competition
By Doug P., Bronze Team

Can you imagine a 10-foot lighthouse made of nothing but tomato soup and bottles of water? Well the MMS Canstruction Team made that a reality.

Canstruction is a club, led by Mrs. Flaherty-Cramm and Ms. Behrman, in which students plan all year to construct a replica of architecture solely out of cans. All of the cans go to charity once we finish, so it's for a good cause. This year, the students of MMS decided to make a lighthouse.

When trying to decide on what to build, club members thought of many items including the Ancient Wonders of the World, an upside-down ice cream cone, or a tree the resembled the one in this year's school play called Fable. At first, we hardly ever talked about a lighthouse.

Despite the fact that the lighthouse came into the picture later, the structure was a huge success. In fact, the project was so well done, that the team took third place at the state competition in Hartford . Photos of the lighthouse will now be entered in a national competition.

The students involved also had a great time completing the project, even before hearing of the competition results. Seventh grader Dylan Lareau said, “It turned out pretty awesome.”

And this reporter agrees. In fact, it was better than awesome! When we got to the top of the lighthouse, we put in a light, courtesy of Captain Matt Gentile, which was surrounded by water bottles. When we made the light turn around, flashing, it made the perfect lighthouse effect, and it was beautiful.

The sight of this “building” in it's completed form was something special, which made it a great experience, and if you aren't going to high school next year, I strongly recommend this team as a first choice for clubs.

Devon , another Canstruction club member, said this about Canstruction, “My brother was in [the club] for 2 years, and I've been in it for 2 years, too.”

If you know any kids in 5 th grade, you should try and get to them this issue of the Dragon so they know a little more about MMS. They can also talk to any of the following students, who participated on this year's team. Below is an image of the MMS Canstruction team's structure.
