Magazines make money for Middlesex
By Emily T., Purple Team & Emily W., Gold Team

There's a chill in the air, and the leaves are changing, that means it's time to…buy magazines! The annual MMS Magazine Drive was back this year with even bigger and better prizes.

Why do they have the magazine drive you ask? Well Miss Eckersdorff, who helps organize the Drive as a faculty advisor for Student Council, explained that the school chose a magazine drive so it didn't overlap with the elementary schools and their wrapping paper. This would help people who wanted to help both schools and wouldn't have to choose one school over another.

It turned out to be a sucessful idea! The first hand in day was a big hit. With 7 orders or more, students were entered in a drawing to win a Coca Cola vending machine. The winner, 7th grader Claudia Pomponi, was thrilled upon learning about her new prize. To go along with her victory, the top seller on the first day was 7th grader Corey Eppley, who won triple the tickets. Corey was the top seller last year also, and successfully defended his title on Day One.

According to Miss Eckersdorff, the Magazine Drive has been going on for almost 30 years and last year, there was enough money raised to fund all of our fun-filled team activities and club sessions. "There have been more than 6,000 magazine subscriptions that are purchased or renewed each year", said Miss Eckersdorff.

This is obviously a huge number of magazines, but the key question is which grade sells the most? "Typically 6th grade because they're new to it," she said. Miss Eckersdorff herself even purchases some of the many magazines, "I always read Real Simple, Martha Stewart's Living, and Practical Horseman." And even though Middlesex students are very involved in the drive, more subscriptions are sold to adults than are sold for childern and teen magazines.

Even though the Magazine Drive is over, students still have the Pig Races to look forward to, which will feature members from various homerooms that participated the most during the Drive. It should be an exciting race, and make sure to check back here for the results of those races once they become available.
