New Teacher Spotlight
Ms. Warren

Subject: Grade 8 English
Maroon Team
Number of Years at MMS: 1

Interview by Taryn B., Navy Team

Ms. Abby Warren is an 8th grade English teacher on the Maroon team. This is her first year at Middlesex but she taught 7th grade English at Western Middle School in Greenwich for seven years. Not only did Ms. Warren teach English, but she also taught three years of social studies while still teaching English. During Ms. Warren's school years, she loved chorus and even called herself a drama freak. She did enjoy English while growing up, but she always wanted to be a Broadway singer so she went to a college for acting. She received a scholarship and was very excited until she actually got there and realized she could not take the pressures of acting; she decided to switch her major to English education which she was already studying at the time. After she switched, she loved her school and classes.

Now starting something new is always a hard thing to do, but if you have someone to help you and you are brave, it will work out; that is how Ms. Warren has adjusted to her new surroundings with help from Ms. Thelin her “roommate”, Ms. Vita, and Mr. Sorensen. Ms. Warren did admit to being nervous on the days leading up to and the start of school, but she says even adults can get nervous and get that “no one will like me” feeling. I asked her if she was intimidated by her Maroon team students, which she loves by the way, and her response was “No, I've had some tough kids in the past, and so far, my new kids are fantastic.” Ms. Warren's advice to students and teachers about starting something new is be yourself. She then quoted Mr. Sorensen saying, “Don't get mad, don't be mean.” Finally, Ms. Warren is so excited to be here and since the year started off so well, she believes that it can only get better.
