Spotlight: My First Tree
By Emily D., Blue Team

A cool fall day,
A free afternoon and I wanted to play.
Outside is where I first venture,
I remember feeling that need, that need for adventure.
With so many trees I could have chosen, the apple tree or the dog wood trees,
They were so big I could never climb them with ease.
I look around and see,
The Japanese maple tree.
It was small as was I,
It was perfect don't you see, not too small and not too high.
As I climb onto the first limb,
I carefully balanced myself, not wanting to fall off the rim.
As I grip the bark tight,
I can see my knuckles turning white.
Being ever so careful not to fall,
Up and up, I crawl.
Every time I reach a new branch and look down it feels as if I am on top of the world
I can see the leaves, and when the wind blows they twirl.
When I reach the top I look around,
I feel like I can see everything, from the sky to the ground.
The cool fall breeze lightly blows my hair behind me,
I take one last look at the earth from up above
And climbed back down.
