Middlesex Breaks Personal UNICEF Best
By Zoe B., Caroline S., & Emily T., Purple Team

UNICEF has been around since 1947, and every year it works to raise more and more money for countries all around the globe. Each year on Halloween, UNICEF runs a special Trick-or-Treat fundraiser, and at Middlesex Middle school in 2005 we raised $14,209.34. Because of our success we won the Kids Helping Kids challenge, which led Procter and Gamble to donate $150,000 in MMS's name.

This year, however, we raised a whopping $22,204.20! The top three homerooms by grade, and the trend setters for the week long fundraiser were Mrs. Cross (6th grade), Ms. Vita (7th grade), and Ms. Sandor (8th grade). Middlesex started participating in UNICEF over 20 years ago getting more involved each year with bake-sales and orange collection boxes.

UNICEF helps families all around the world that need various important items. They provide them with education opportunities, school supplies, teacher training, school reparation, reuniting of parents and children after separation, and orphan care. They also provide immunization that prevent deadly diseases including HIV and AIDS, food, water, sanitation, and iodized salt which provides nutrients.

Before Halloween Middlesex provides each student with a “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF” orange box. This is used for collecting spare change that many families will be willing to give out on Halloween night. Anyone outside the school can create a fundraising campaign with his or her school or neighborhood to help raise money for children in need.

By raising only one dollar you can save a child's life from measles or polio. Imagine what $20.00, or in Middlesex's case $22,204.20,can do.
