Blue Wave Super Fans Group Lives On
NEIRAD enilno edition
Last year, Class of 2011 seniors Alex Bruno and Evan Rogers took on the challenge of reviving the Blue Wave Super Fans Facebook group. The Class of 2009 had great success with this group, bringing the school together for sporting events, and Bruno and Rogers wanted to do the same. The boys did well in boosting attendance at games by posting when game times were in the group. After a year of fun cheering for all the students, the question became: Can the Class of 2012 have just as much school pride as 2011 did?
I have heard a lot of talk from many people saying they doubt that the Class of 2012 will have just as much school spirit. Last year, in a previous Neirad article, Bruno stated, “Honestly, junior guys don't come to sporting events. Super Fans won't exist next year.” Senior Matt Lee and I have chosen to prove everyone wrong. Over the summer Bruno and Rogers “handed down the torch” to us to be head administrators of the Facebook group.
Throughout high school, Lee and I have been huge supporters of all Darien High School sport teams, going to every game we can. “We’re going to step up and do it big,” Lee said. Since freshman year, the two of us have looked up to the senior classes and watched as they led numerous cheers. We have always hoped that when we became seniors we could do the same, and this year we finally have this opportunity.
Lee and I want to continue what Bruno and Rogers revived. “We want to prove to all former senior classes that we can, and will, get crazy for sporting events,” Lee said.
“I think the Super Fan group definitely improves school spirit,” junior Riley Sousa said. “Sometimes students forget to have school spirit all the time, but when they have everyday people encouraging it, they are more likely to get involved.”
Senior Cal Kevorkian has always been a huge fan of Blue Wave sports. “I wanted to be in charge of the Super Fans group,” he said, “I would have thrown a parade.” Even though he isn’t in charge, Kevorkian has many plans of his own to bring more people to come to games. “As a senior I’m basically going to body paint myself blue,” (he later went on to say, “Da ba dee da ba die.”)
Lee and I will constantly be the Blue Wave Super Fans group with dates and times of sport games. We will be keeping tradition by coordinating the typical white-outs, blue-outs, and black-outs, where everyone dressing in one of those chosen colors for a game.
“Matt and you will be strong leaders for the senior class and I’m sure [you] will motivate students to get excited about all school events,” Sousa said.
Fall sports are just beginning and we plan on getting attendance up for every sport including football, girls’ volleyball, field hockey, swimming, boys’ and girls’ soccer, and cross country. Throughout the year we will also add more sports to that list including ice hockey, lacrosse, basketball, and boys’ volleyball. Many hope that our football team can make it to the FCIAC Championship again. Last year, hundreds of DHS students took the journey all the way to Trumbull to experience one of the most exciting games our school has ever seen. Lee and I hope to bring that many fans to games again this year.
Although Matt and I are the administrators of the group, we aren’t the only ones that can work to get more students to come to games. “I plan on bribing students with candy and letting them pet my puppy,” Kevorkian said. “I’m also going to motorcycle jump across the stadium.”
If you want more information about the group, you can log onto Facebook, search “Blue Wave Super Fans”, and click “Join” to become a part of the group. Don’t let the previous senior classes be right, come to the games to show them we can have just as much school spirit as they did.
