When walking into the main gym of Darien High School, it’s hard not to notice the many banners decorating the walls from the dozens of Blue Wave state and FCIAC titles. Unfortunately, there is one sport woefully missing from those walls: girl’s soccer.
Hopefully a new blue banner will be hung with “Girl’s Soccer” proudly displayed at the top. The team was undefeated this year having beaten St. Joes who was number one in the state. However, earlier in October, they lost their first game to Ridgefield. “I don’t think anyone, including our coach, could have anticipated our success,” says a Senior Captain, Brooke Pfister.
The team plays to win by creating a ton of scoring opportunities. Their record proves this strategy successful. They have also been working on improving their offense each game which is a great quality. Sophomore and varsity goalie, Charlotte Phillips commented on the team’s chemistry saying, “Our whole team is so solid, and it’s amazing watching everyone play so well together.”
Captains have always told their team not to get cocky about games, no matter how many they have won. Every time they get out on the field, the team is expected to play to their fullest potential and to always work hard together. These outstanding values that the captains instill in their team have been one of the major reasons for success this year.
So far the team’s efforts have paid off well. The varsity team has finished off their regular season as league champions, holding a 13-1-1 record. The team set a new mark in the history of Darien girl’s soccer with this season’s record.
During this season, Darien was finally able our town rival, New Canaan and beat St. Joes, one of the best teams in the league. Phillips said, “St. Joes has always finished the League first, and they're notorious for being the best team in the FCIAC. We completely destroyed them 6-0 when we played them, which was a huge upset and gave everyone a lot of confidence going forward.”
One of the team’s biggest accomplishments to brag about though was succeeding in defeating the FCIACS reigning champs: Greenwich. This gave the team an extra boost of confidence when entering FCIACS last week. The girls moved onto the semifinals after beating Wilton in their first game. Unfortunately, the team was defeated by St. Joes in the semis. St. Joes earned their first FCIAC title.
Before moving into the semifinals, Phillips commented on their season saying, “Our goal now is to win FCIACS and hopefully States, but even if this doesn’t happen, we’ll have a lot to be proud of.”
The girl’s team definitely has a lot to be proud of, even after being defeated by St. Joes in FCIACS. The girl’s are now headed to States and hope big results. Based on how the team’s season has played out so far, Darien should sail through states without breaking much of a sweat. In the words of Charlotte Phillips, “Yeahhh wave!”
