Joseph Maccarone isn’t just your regular artsy kid. He’s also ridiculously weird and funny, while being a caring, thoughtful, Nintendo- playing individual. Aside from being all of those things, he is called friend by a plethora of young people known as adolescents.

In a recent poll taken of 16-year-olds, one out of one people think that Joe is “deliciously amusing” and “a man far ahead of his time.” (Poll taken by junior Ben Wood) “I would describe myself as unique. Oh yeah, and weird” Joe said.

The artsy side of Joe is that he can draw like a demon. Some of his work has been looked at by TrickGo Clothing™ and should be treated with the correct honor that comes from a scouting like that. Some of his artistic creations include drawings of Nintendo-based characters, creatively splattered rhinos, and blob- shaped things that he creatively calls ‘noms.’

Joe’s love of video games obviously inspires him to draw gaming characters such as Mario and Sonic “If aliens ever landed on our planet and told us that if we could not beat them in Mario Kart, they would destroy our planet, I would nominate Joe to race them” said a source who wished to remain anonymous.

Joe has been playing video games since his introduction to the Nintendo 64, nearly 10 years ago, at the ripe age of seven. It has influenced Joe’s thinking since then, and he’s learned how to re-enact them—regardless of where he might be. Just yesterday, this reporter watched as Joe ran, jumped, and span off walls on the way to his class.

Other than video games, in his spare time, Joe likes to play guitar, solve Rubik’s Cubes, and to “send stupid YouTube videos to Andrew West.” "There is nothing I love more than opening up my inbox and finding a fresh batch of forwarded video clips from Joe," says West. Joe listens to “a lot of Indie Rock. I do that while I drink green tea and write poetry. You know artsy kid stuff.”

Joe also beat boxes regularly in the library, contrary to numerous warnings given by the great Canadian bacon at least three times a day. I heard Joe in one of the study rooms beat boxing his little heart out. “Beat boxing is a way of life for me. It’s a great way to express my emotions, by making obnoxious sounds with my mouth,” said Joe. “Sometimes I have beat box battles with Reilly Harmer and Daniel "Dan" Glockler. Any challengers are welcome.”

  • Mrs. Ricci, the school bursar

When asked about sports, Joe promptly laughed straight in my face. “Is that a joke?” Naturally, as a kid who doesn’t get out much, he’s pretty uncoordinated.  When executing his ninja moves in the hallways, he trips and falls on a regular basis. Other than falling over, Joe does a sport that he loves. “I ski, and occasionally, I also…. Nah, I just ski.” Joe participates in the ski team during the winter, and says that he has wondrous fun of magical proportions.

“I don’t care what people think of me,” Joe says. “For example, one time, while walking through the hallway, I pretended to be a ninja and hid from people.” Most high school kids would see this as high treason, but Joe is indifferent to their criticism. “Even though I’m constantly called freak, weirdo, and occasionally Joe, I still know who I am on the inside.”

Joe’s just an underappreciated nice guy. His friends love him. His family loves him. Even if you don’t know him, you’ll learn to love him. He’s that guy who will always lend a helping hand, even when he only has two of them. “When I needed help, I asked to borrow Joe's cell phone, and he said ‘sure.’  That's just the kind of kid Joe is,” said Christian Holmes, a long time friend of Joe’s and junior at DHS. Joe is also there to offer any stiff-faced friend a good laugh as junior Andy Brewer put it, “Joe Maccarone makes rofl and lol on a daily basis,” and if you can make Andy rofl, you can make anyone rofl. Andy continued with “one might also say that Joe Maccarone tops sophomore Ryan Dirvin, codenamed Lunchbox, as the cutest kid in the world.” That’s an achievement to be proud of. After seeing this obvious attempt by Andy to discredit Lunchbox’s cute factor, Lunchbox said “I am ok with it to be honest. Second cutest is still pretty good."

“Joe is just way too much to fit into a quote” said junior Lauren Duwan, and I think that sums him up. Joe Maccarone has a monstrously perfect personality, and I’m glad to be one of those young adolescents that can call him friend.
