Throughout the course of the school year, every DHS student is bound to see a sand-colored Chevrolet Tahoe that’s jacked way up on some big wheels. Most likely that student will think to him or herself, “Who the hell is driving that thing?” Well, let it be known to all that the mysterious driver is none other than senior Jack Daly and the rig that he’s driving is a 1996 Chevy Tahoe.
The Tahoe is a four-door, metallic monster equipped with a gigantic 6.5 Liter V8 engine. It is also has an aftermarket grill guard with fog lights as well as two Grizzly Guards on the two rear tail lights. The suspension on the car is brand new and the truck is also equipped with Flomaster Tip Dual Exhaust.
Another feature of this beast of a truck is a trailer hitch that lights up with a Chevy symbol each time Jack brakes. The mirrors also have hitch mirrors on them, which enables Jack to easily see any trailer he pulls.
The stereo system has some modifications with an after market Panasonic head unit to control the music and also includes two 12” Mongoose subwoofers. Yet, the main feature of this car is the huge wheels that get everyone’s attention in the parking lot. The wheels are huge buckshot tires with dimensions of 35” by 12.5”, made ideally for all-weather terrain. All of these impressive features make one wonder what Jack enjoys most about his monster truck.
“I like the sound system with my subs. I also like riding high. I am not sure why but I have always loved the feeling of driving trucks over cars. Another thing I like is the sound from my muffler because it sounds like a Donzi boat ready to take off,” Jack said.
The way Jack got the car is quite a story, as it all happened in the summer after his sophomore year. Jack was in Franklin, Tennessee with his family for a few weeks. His parents decided Jack should look at some cars since he now had his license and was getting to the point of needing his own transportation. His dad told his older brother to run down to the store and buy an Autotrader magazine; on the way home his brother looked through it and saw the truck. Immediately, he showed it to Jack and said, “I think we should check this out.” So the two brothers make the 45-mimutre trek up to Hendersonville, Tennessee. They met the owner, who was actually also a young man. Jack’s brother, who is a mechanic, inspected the car and then took it for a test drive.
“The car looked great for only having 127,000 miles on it,” Jack said. They both fell in love after this test-drive. “I remember my brother telling me ‘That is the perfect car’ and from there we both knew that we just had to buy it.” As soon as they got home, they told their dad that they were laying down $6,500 for the Tahoe.
Yet, after having the truck for a solid year and a half, Jack is starting to think about parting ways. “Yeah I’ve been thinking about selling it,” Jack said, “I am going to college pretty soon, and the high price of fuel is a problem as it doesn’t get the best gas mileage.” Instead, Jack is thinking of replacing his Chevy with a newer model truck. He would like to get either a Chevy 2500 Heavy Duty or a Chevy Silverado. Also under consideration is a GMC Sierra.
Jack loves his car. He knows that his truck is unique and stands out in Darien from the many other BMWs and Audis in the DHS lot. Jack has put some major work into his Chevy and it has paid off. The Tahoe is an absolute monster on the road.
