The DHS Gymnastics team has always been one of schools’ top programs. This past year, the team finished second in the FCIACs and fourth at the state tournament. Over the past two years, much of the team’s success can be credited to the incredible athleticism of sophomore Charlotte Morgan.
Charlotte began her career in gymnastics at the age of six. “I decided gymnastics was “my thing” when I first started. I was really excited about learning the new skills; it came pretty naturally to me,” Morgan said. “My favorite event is Floor because I love the combination of dancing and tumbling but my best event for high school gymnastics is bars because my routines are very clean.”
When Charlotte first joined the team, she had an immediate impact helping the squad win its first conference championship since 2005. This year she had yet another standout season, where she finished 12 th overall in the state competition. Charlotte was also named to the All-Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference Girls Gymnastics First Team.
“Charlotte has been a really important member of the team,” senior teammate Anna McPhee said. “Over the last two years she has grown a lot and hopefully she will be able to lead the team for her remaining years with the team.”
However, next year she will have to take on a more challenging role. “I'm hoping to be captain next year since there are no juniors on the team and I will be the only upperclassman,” Charlotte said. “I'm really looking forward to it.”
Charlotte's Top 5 Gymnasts
The 2009-10 season presents some big challenges. Charlotte will be captaining a very young roster due to the seniors who will be graduating this year. “We are losing Grace Ann Sweeney and Kaylyn Van Sciver (as well as five other seniors) who have contributed to the team’s success the last four years.”
However, despite the loss of talent, Charlotte is still optimistic. “We have a bunch of incoming freshmen that have great potential,” she said. Hopefully the young team will be able to recreate another successful season for Blue Wave Gymnastics.
Though Morgan has already proved to be an important factor for the team, in the next two years, she plans to improve further still. This year she missed the cut for New England’s by .1 point on bars. Needless to say, she is hungry for another shot next year.
Over the last two years, Charlotte has proved to be an outstanding high school athlete. “College gymnastics is a possibility, but something I would have to work really hard for,” Morgan said when asked whether she would take her gymnastics to the next level.
Hopefully, with hard work and another fantastic season, Charlotte will be able to compete at a collegiate rank. Her high school performance suggests that aspiration will most likely become reality.
