Around the town, taped to doors and windows, are posters advertising Darien’s “going green” initiative. The minds behind the posters were students from Ms. Dorine Bosler’s graphic design class which for the second year entered the Darien Going Green Poster contest. The contest, hosted by the Darien Chamber of Commerce, challenged students to create a design about what it means for the town of Darien to be environmentally friendly. After evaluating 30 student entries, a verdict was made. Three contest winners were presented with awards at the Darien Sport Shop. In first place was senior Sarah Abbasi, second place was senior Samantha Stevenson, and third place was senior Shannon Moore.
“I thought the contest was extremely enlightening, because it made the students get involved and create an idea to represent what "going green" should be about” Moore said. The contest was part of a larger effort of the Darien Chamber of Commerce’s “Darien Goes Green Pledge” and was one of the activities that the chamber’s DEG “Green Team” designed. “As a way to encompass more community involvement, we reached out to Ms. Bosler's talented DHS Graphics Art class to come up with a poster which could be used throughout Darien to urge the entire community to think of the future, and act now for a cleaner environment,” Carol Wilder-Tamme President/CEO of the Darien Chamber of Commerce said.
Abbasi’s poster was displayed all around the town for everyone to see. “I was mainly inspired by the idea that all of us need to focus more on taking actions that won't cause further harm to our environment,” Abbasi said. Sarah’s poster involves aspects of damage to the plant by having the bottom half of the earth dark and the top half light, which represented an earth that is cleaner and safer.
“This contest not only provides students the opportunity to work with the community but also presents students with a job assignment that would be presented to a professional artist.” Ms. Bosler said.
The poster contest was a similar set up to what an artist may find when they would be contracted by a company to create an assignment. This authentic experience gave the students an environment in which they could feel what it would be like to have a career related to graphic design, but in the learning and less strenuous environment of a school class room.
So next time you happen to spot one of the Darien Going Green Posters, take some time to admire the design. The blooming flowers and the symmetrical butterflies may just encourage you to next time, take a few extra steps and throw your water bottle in the recycle bin instead of the trash. By doing this you to could help the town of Darien go green.
