When Hollywood began to market a new brand of “Star Trek” they fell on the slogan “Not your father’s Star Trek” and they couldn’t have been more right. With high-flying action scenes, explosions and even romance, this year’s “Star Trek” is bound to be a blockbuster hit and not only for staunch Trekkies.

With time travel and some of the best graphics money can buy, director J.J. Abrams gave the old classic sci- fi series new life. The movie is set right before the original series begins with the birth of James T. Kirk.

Moving past the exciting opening scene, the movie then moves on to develop all the characters from the hit 1966 TV show. Due to the movie’s “alternate reality” Abrams was able to make changes to the complex past of the television series without contradicting any Trekkies’ fantasies, and with this flexibility Abrams went wild.

With new young actors playing old classic roles, such as Chris Pine as Jame T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, the film shifts both through time and through space moving from a little boy going 70 MPH down a dirt road in Iowa to massive space battles on the outskirts of an exploding star.

Even though the movie’s “alternate reality” stays true to its past it also allows people who have never even thought of watching “Star Trek” before to enjoy this movie. With a plot starting from the very beginning of all the main characters’ lives, “Star Trek” is easy to follow and a constant thrill ride. With the development of Kirk from birth all the way to his triumphant victories, the movie takes characters of the past and makes them new again to any viewer.

For fans of “Star Trek” who never missed an episode, the movie will be far from disappointing. With the well-developed plot and characters that you all know, the script stays true to classic Trek plots but also adds a little twist. But the largest triumph of the movie for any fan of the TV show is the appearance of Leonard Nimoy cast in a significant role.

I don’t want to ruin it for others, so I won’t say how Nimoy plays into the plot, but anyone who cherishes this “Star Trek” veteran won’t be disappointed. If you have no idea who Nimoy is then don’t worry because when he comes on screen all the nerds in the audience will begin to clap, scream and maybe even cry.

Overall the new “Star Trek” movie was a joy to watch and easily fits into its role as this year’s best action/adventure movie.
