Blast from the Past: February 1997
As the school year begins again, new seniors are given the privilege of parking at school. But what about all the juniors with their license? The Neirad issue from February 1997 highlights DHS's lack of student parking. (Note: juniors were allowed to park in 1997.)

Have any of you upperclassmen noticed the recent shortage of parking spots in the lots at DHS? The other day, I was hiking into the school from what seemed to be the absolute farthest spot from it, I realized that there were a lot of cars that had just recently begun to make an appearance at the high school. There were a lot of cares that belonged to the younger half of our school. The sophomores that have been parking at school are really beginning to have an effect on the way the parking lot works and on who parks where. I remember a time when the parking lot was for the upperclassmen of the school and this fact was respected by the younger students attending the school. Those days seem to be lost, due to the selfish ways of thinking that have taken over the minds of a small percentage of DHS underclassmen. The fact that there erally is a noticeable effect on the availability of parking spots for juniors and seniors should tell the administration something, and actions should be taken to correct the problem.
The recent shortage of spots not only shows a lack of respect for older students, it signals a lack of respect for the administration as well, Juniors and seniors who park had to wait until they were in the appropriate "parking grade", and those rules should still be followed. Everyone will have their chance to park; patience should be exercised in waiting. The administration made a decision about the age at which the students at DHS should be allowed to park, and the fact that some are not heading this decision and are parking anyway simply shows the fact that certain students do not care about the rules, which are given to be followed. The fact that parking lot is filled to its maximum should show the students that are parking "illegally" that they are the cause of the problem. The administration has mastered the runaround on the issue. "It's always been a junior-senior privilege to park, and due to the increase in enrollment, there are not enough spaces," said Mr.s. Hyatt. The subject at hand is being avoided. Action needs to be taken as soon as possible.
