After a balanced summer of relaxation and training, DHS girls’ varsity field hockey captain Taylor Wells is ready to focus on a successful fall season. As a leader, and a stalwart defenseman, Wells will be a strong force on the defensive “wall”.
“I am really looking forward to an intense season. Wilton will definitely be our biggest opponent this year. We played them in three games last year and each game was a little closer than the next. They only lost to us by one goal in the state championship game. This year they will probably come out really strong and try and get revenge," Wells said.
The DHS Senior has been playing field hockey for five years. She began in the YMCA youth program, then she entered the high school, and has been a consistent player on varsity. She trains during the off season when she is not busy playing basketball in the winter. She plays on the Fairfield County United Club in the spring and summer, and trains with “Boyd Body,” a group of trainers who “cater to our field hockey needs,” Wells said.
Wells is a light-hearted and modest person who may be a field hockey force but is the first to admit she does not possess the same talent on the basketball court. "I love basketball, but I'm just not that good. I'm like the team cheerleader--the spirit of the team," Wells said.

One of her aspirations is to play field hockey beyond the high school level. She plans on pursuing the sport in college. “I love the sport and think it would be a great experience to play in college,” Wells said. She puts in a lot of effort off season by attending camps and tournaments in order to get noticed by various college coaches.
However, Wells’ main focus is on the upcoming season to make it a trifecta – take home the state title for a third year. “Being a captain after the team won FCIACs and States two years in a row is a demanding position, but it is setting an awesome goal for the team. The team this upcoming season has a lot of underclassmen potential, and I can’t wait to see how things turn out,” Wells said.
Well garners respect for her new role in a leadership position. “She is a great teammate who is very supportive and reliable. What I love about playing with Taylor is that she understands that the game is not only about her, it is about how she can help her team. Playing by her side I know that she will be there to help when I make a mistake. Throughout every game I could feel her support behind me,” DHS Class of 2009 grad and former teammate Olivia Vegliante said.
Junior teammate Sophie Doering agrees that "Taylor is a very dependable defender who we can always count on.”
With many aspirations for the team, as well as for her own career in field hockey, Wells will be a very positive asset to team this fall. “This year I just really want to focus on having fun, but at the same time balancing that with the success that the field hockey team has achieved in the last two years."
