Six million people visited polyvore.com this past month. What’s the catch? This brand new fashion Web site is notably different from its cyber fashion predecessors. Instead of simply scrolling through the different clothes, polyvore allows the purchaser make a collage, or a set, in which they create an outfit by simply dragging the photo to the desired piece of clothing into a blank background. The shopper can browse the different clothes, accessories and shoes or choose to click on the clothing through categorized tabs.
Polyvore.com is much different from your average Web site. The site is all about the visuals; a user can select an entire outfit, complete with accessories with a swift drag of the image onto the blank background that acts as the base to create the look. “I love this Web site! It’s really easy to use; I could use it for hours!” sophomore Elyssa Ganser said.
My personal favorites are a pair of teal sandals by Cynthia Vincent Coco for $250. They are great for not only spring but summer as well; you can wear them with a dress or even go as casual as jean shorts. Another standout item on the site was a strapless floral dress made of silk by Rebecca Taylor for $495. As some of you may know, floral is definitely happening in the fashion world this spring and this Web site provides plenty of this season’s most trendy clothes.
Even though the prices may be a little high, each piece of clothing is so trendy and casual for any teen, that it’s easy to persuade yourself to splurge. Most of the shirts average around $200; however you can find some for as low as $55. For example, there is a very cute, striped white and black v-neck tank top for only $55 from Zoe Tees.
Polyvore contains familiar designers such as Coach, Burberry and many more. “Online shopping just lacks something,” Polyvore chief executive Singh Cassidy said in a recent New York Times story. Singh Cassidy recently left Google as former president of Asia- Pacific and Latin America operation, where she had been working since 2003, in order to help start-up this new fashion Web site. Polyvore was founded in 2007 by Harrison Metal and Matrix Partners however Singh didn’t begin working for the site until this March of 2010. Despite her recent arrival to the Web site, Singh and Polyvore employees are able to successfully add a whole new face to online shopping just by allowing for viewers to be able to be more involved and engaged in the outfits they are observing.
Another upcoming hit is celestyle.com, which seems to be taking over online shopping by storm. On this site, an outfit is picked to match a picture of a celebrity by professional shoppers from companies like GumGum and Pixazza. Both companies were able to land while Pixazza acquired 5.8 million, both to help advertise celebstyle.com.
Even though celebstyle.com differs from Polyvore on many different levels, it also remains to be distinctive from your typical online shopping experience. On this Web site, a picture of any celebrity from Rachel Bilson to Sara Jessica Parker is taken. Then, pieces of clothing from the exact outfit the star is wearing are found from Bloomingdales, Nordstrom or Zappos for either the same price or (ideally) much less expensive.
“It’s good to know that I can find somewhere to buy similar clothes from my favorite celebrities for a cheaper price,” sophomore Karoline Lozier said. Karoline’s favorite star to consul in fashion is Lauren Conrad from The Hills. “She has a very down-to-earth style and always looks put together”, exclaimed Karoline. Even though Lauren Conrad specializes in casual wear, she also knows how to dress it up. “One of my favorite outfits was the one where she wore a navy, silk dress on one of the episodes from the Hills”. Karoline was able to find the entire outfit on celebstyle where she discovered that the silk dress was from Marc Jacobs. She also was able to discover the designers of Conrad’s accessories which consisted of a black Chanel bag and satin Christian Louboutin shoes.
This site can replicate the outfits worn by today’s most famous celebrities, allowing for any ordinary teen to wear the same thing, or close to it. Check out both of these entertaining Web Sites today!
