After much anticipation, the seventh installment of the “Harry Potter” series opened providing the perfect gift for fans this holiday season. People plunked out $125 million on opening weekend to see “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I”. They were not disappointed.  The movie is based on the first part of the last book.

Although the film has a dark undertone (the Ministry of Magic gets rid of the Mudbloods and Voldemort is at large once again) the action is unbelievably good.

From snakes jumping out at viewers to the endless spells it is undeniably exciting. There was an element that set the movie apart from the previous ones.  Harry, Ron and Hermione are completely on their own without Dumbledore to protect them. The threesome joins forces against the Dark Lord. They jump back and forth, place to place trying to find the seven Horcruxes. Their mission entails finding all seven in order to defeat Lord Voldemort. The Horcrux is a "receptacle in which a Dark wizard has hidden a part of his soul for the purposes of attaining immortality," author J.K. Rowling writes.

The only thing that I would criticize is that if a viewer is not up to date on the books or the previous movies they will be utterly lost. But having said that, even if a dazed viewer finds himself a bit lost, the movie can still be extremely entertaining based on the special effects and stellar acting.

The first scene features the main characters Hermione, Ron and Harry, leaving their homes and getting ready to fight. It immediately drops into the action and a mystical world of magic. For example the classic Polyjuice Potion that we have seen previously in the series is used so every character looks like Harry and makes him harder to find. Not only was this a humorous and magical scene, but it also displayed the urgency to protect Harry.

Another element that was much anticipated was the growing love connection between the characters: Ron and Hermione, and Harry and Ron’s little sister Ginny.  It was interesting to use Ron’s jealousy of Harry’s and Hermione’s friendship as a force to enrage him to destroy the Horcruxes. It was surprising that that angle was used, even though there was nothing going on romantically between Hermione and Harry.

Overall, this movie is a must see; its action will keep you at the edge of the seat and exciting. Just make sure before you see the movie you do a little brush-up on the sxith book, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” whether it is reading or renting the movie, just to make sure you aren’t confused.
