With the cold weather officially set in, those piggies can’t stand the flip flops. New seasons bring new trends in footwear. The best place to see the repertoire of different shoes while at the same time see thousands of the same pairs of shoes is in the DHS halls.

This year’s shoe fads are a bright change from last year. The 2009-2010 fall shoe fashion had many doubtful showings. There were many complaints in the fashion world about the footwear choices that winter. Shoe Paparazzi, a blog, last year posted, “This winter is looking to be a bit drab compared to the spring and summer, in footwear trends that is.”

Also on Million Looks.com an article from last year described the shoe fashion for that season, “The new season seems to be much more ‘practical’ than last Fall/Winter 2008/2009 shoe trend. There are no more strange forms, motley palettes and huge elements.” However, Million Looks.com has a more positive outlook for winter of 2010-11.

This year, some of the biggest winter trends all over the world include: fur boots, laced- up boots, shoes with buckles, stilettos, chunk heels, wedges, etc. However, boots are especially popular for students including over-the-knee boots, flat winter boots, fold-down boots, faux fur trim boots and cowboy boots.

Junior Caroline Farrington responded to why she likes shoes, “Some just make me feel tall, which is important when you are as short as I am (five two and three quarters-Almost five three).”

Another shoe that’s never gone out of style, but seems to be getting more popular is the Converse. There are lots of forms: high tops, low tops, extra high. Either in solid colors or patterns, Converses are leaping back into fashion. The most popular colors seem to be gray, navy, and white. And the low tops or canvas, low tops without lace and fringe around the tongue, seem to be the most common style of Converse.

“Right now I have black, red, gray, and purple. They are super comfy and go with anything. They also go with any kind of fashion (genre) like preppy, skater, etc. I love them because they just make me feel awesome. I love the look!” sophomore Catie Carnes said.
Neirad Enilno sat down and asked some students what their favorite shoes are for this season and why.

Sophomore Stephanie Hurn said, “I like to wear sneakers everyday because they are the comfiest. Everything else either ruins my socks (cowboy boots) or is not very good support (Converse).”  Farrington said, “Wouldn’t any girl say Ugg?”

As different fads come in and out of popularity, different shoes take the spotlight. For the last few years the popular Ugg boot has taken center stage, but its curtains have closed. Students seem to have conflicting feelings. Sophomore Emily Karlik was seen wearing Uggs. “They’re really comfy,” Karlik said.

However, when Neirad Enilno asked her if she thought they were going out of style Karlik along with sophomore Izzy Lee, who was sitting next to her, responded in unison, “yes.” Junior Livy Ashburne had a different opinion. “They go with everything. They’re really comfortable. They’re fuzzy. They’re definitely still in style.” Ugg boots range from $120 for the classic mini boot all the way to $250 for the newer, fancier styles (i.e. Classic Argyle Knit, Classic Cardy, and Bailey Button).

Whether students are wearing the shoes on their feet for comfort, fashion or practicality, each student puts shoes on in the morning for a reason.
