Cops are coming down hard on civilians lately, especially on the laws that may have been over looked before. With the warmer weather this past month the police department has gotten some calls complaining about a speedy biker on Norton Avenue, near the high school. To the police’s surprise, when they responded to the call the next day, they had to pull over the biker and give him a speeding ticket. On the radar, the speedometer read 67 mph, 2 miles over the speed limit for biking in Connecticut. Once the cop caught up to him he was charged with a speeding ticket for speeding in a school zone, and going over 65 mph on a bicycle.

The speeder: our own history teacher, Mr. William Devlin. Many students know he bicycles from the train to school in the warmer months. He has gradually gotten faster and stronger the more he cycles. Biking makes him more focused throughout the day and he didn’t realize how much faster he was going each day. “I didn’t really notice how fast I was going, I guess I have built up my stamina so much” said Devlin.

The police department, was not only shocked and impressed by his speed, but very concerned about the endangerment of the children who walk to school and the rest of the vehicular traffic. “He could lose control and hit a student walking to school, and since he was going so fast, they would never see him coming, the entire situation is just dangerous” a Darien police responder said. “I’ll have to try and maintain a lower speed, but it’s difficult since I’m used to going so fast,” Devlin said.
