APRIL FOOLS EDITION:
DHS Parents Hit the Field
NEIRAD enilno edition
Darien High School has been nationally known for its high school athletics for decades. Whether it is the girls’ volleyball team winning hundreds of matches in a row or the boys’ varsity lacrosse team being ranked in the top five in the country, DHS is renowned for its athletics. This success can be directly attributed to the great coaches and student athletes at DHS. However, much of the student athlete success is due to the athlete’s parent involvement in their high school athletics career. The parents have pushed their children to attend weeks of camps over the summer, forced their kids into the weight room to try to get an edge on the rest of the competition, and drive their kids countless hours for tournaments. In the last few years the DHS parents have crossed the line when it comes to pushing their child’s high school athletics career. Some DHS parents are even rumored to have gone behind the scenes and contacted coaches and pulled strings just to get their kids on the varsity teams or to get their children on the top lines. Mr. Keleher has had enough of the DHS parents trying to live vicariously through their children’s athletic careers. He has felt that this must come to an end. After about a year of brainstorming Mr. Keleher has finally come up with a solution. Mr. Keleher has decided to allow parents of DHS students to tryout for varsity sports teams. This decision will help to allow parents to purse their own glory on the sport fields and not feel the need to live through their children.
The DHS student body has reacted in many ways to Keleher’s recent announcement. This comes as a real shock to some, has made some laugh, but also brings fear to others.
“I can’t believe that this is happening,” junior, Ryan Tubhole said. The students admitted to the problem of parent involvement, but did not think that this was the solution. “I have noticed that parents have been pushing their kids, and I have also noticed that they have been doing things behind the scenes to improve their kids chances on making the team,” senior Jenny Penny said. These students also agreed that the parent’s main reason for doing this was because the parents were trying to relive their childhoods through their children. The children feel that something else could have been done.
When Johnny Joker was asked what he thought about the new announcement he broke out in laughter. Many students think that this will be a joke. They cannot wait to get out on the field and throw their bodies around to get back at there parents for not letting them go out last Friday night. The students like this are not worried at all about the parents coming in and threatening their spots. However not all of the DHS students feel this way….
Senior Danny Feeder said “All of you guys know my dad is a pretty intense guy… I am dead scared that he will be taking my starting spot on the varsity”.
The athletes that share similar to Feeder are the ones who have had their parents pushing them in particular over the years. “I have always been forced to attend camps and I even heard a rumor that my dad has attempted to pay off the coaches just so I can make the team”. Feeder will be particularly scared to take the field come next year knowing that his own father will be out to get him.
DHS’ own athletes will be put to the test over the next year. The parents will get what they have been waiting for since they graduated high school… another chance at glory.
