While most students come into high school hoping to have success in sports, clubs, or academics, others have set bigger goals for themselves. Freshman Emily Stein is not only a tri-varsity athlete, but she is also involved in numerous other activities. With her admirable attitude towards everything she does, she manages to keep up her grades and still be a good friend.

Emily plays for the girl’s soccer team, basketball team, and lacrosse team. She did not just make these teams; she gets a lot of playing time for them too. Some may think that a freshman cannot handle starting high school off with an overwhelming schedule, but Emily feels differently. “At first it is a lot of pressure because you’ve never done it before,” Emily said. “But once you start, it’s just like any other game.”

Before starting school, Emily prepared for the year ahead of her. She spent her summer doing clinics, playing on the Connecticut Chargers team for lacrosse, going to Eastern Soccer Camp, and playing in two additional weeks of soccer preseason camp. Her hard work definitely paid off.

Although she was nervous during tryouts, Emily said, “I was excited I made [the team].” Emily’s soccer coach, Jonathon Bradley, said, “Emily is an extremely hard working and gifted soccer player. She is also a fantastic athlete which [has enabled] her to be on three varsity rosters as a freshman.”

To keep on track with her every sport during other sports’ seasons, Stein did lacrosse clinics all throughout soccer and basketball. She is also involved in the school in other ways including the Teen Peaceworks club, which raises awareness for domestic violence. She is a part of the Depot where she helps raise money for the center. “I’m always busy,” Stein said. “But it teaches you good time management.”

“She works really hard in school and in sports,” Emily’s good friend, freshman Liz Stile, said. “She doesn't care about being the best; she just wants to be her best.”

Anyone could see Emily is a tough, hard working player just from her black eye during her soccer season. “It was pretty beastly,” Stein said, “but embarrassing having a swollen eye for a couple of months.”

Even with a heavy schedule, Emily is still able to stay on top of her grades. Every day after practice she immediately starts her homework, leaving her weekends open to hang out with friends. In addition, all of her different teams have helped Emily make a bunch of new friends. “It’s fun being able to play with new people in different grades and better competition,” she said.

“[Emily] is a really supportive friend,” Liz said. “She will always go out of her way to help someone else. She is so fun to be with and will get anybody laughing.”

Emily has a bright future ahead of her, as she is only able to improve in everything she does for the rest of high school. “I see Emily having an amazing future,” Liz said. “She has great grades, is amazing at sports, and is a really great person.” Emily said, “I hope to play [lacrosse] in college.” Liz agreed that she would be able to play at that level and maybe even go further.

Emily has the right outlook on everything she does.  “Emily is a pleasure to coach as she has such a wonderful attitude,” Coach Bradley said. “I am looking forward to coaching her for the next three years.”

“In my opinion, she is the most talented athlete for girls in [the freshman] grade,” Liz said. “I am very proud of her!”
