Rob Trifone's Blue Wave Football team is now half way through the regular season, and has managed to remain undefeated despite some speculated tough opponents. The team has surpassed all of the media's expectations as is has beaten every team in its path with ease. "There is no question that the media would perceive our 2011 season as a challenging one due to the fact that we graduated 18 of 22 starters," Coach Rob Trifone said. The team was stripped of any foundation they had built the previous season and was forced to rebuild upon many inexperienced juniors.
The media was one of the biggest critics of the Blue Wave in the pre-season and were quickly hushed by the Wave's performance in the past 4 games. "I was cautiously optimistic all along as I knew that the returning members of this year's team worked very hard in the off-season and they refused to listen to any pre-season ratings," Coach Trifone said. Senior Captain Brett O'Donnell has taken charge with the Offensive line and plans to help lead the offense and provide solid protection for Junior quarterback Henry Baldwin. Despite the extremely heavy weight on the team's shoulders heading into the regular season, the Blue Wave managed to hold their own against some of the FCIAC's biggest contenders. Danbury and Staples were certainly some the Wave's biggest competitors thus far.
In the season opener against Fairfield Ludlowe the Wave drowned the Falcons with a 38-13 win at home. The following week the Wave showed its true colors as they stood up against one of the league's toughest teams, Fairfield Warde, when the Wave came back after a large deficit and embarrassed the Mustangs with a 29-19 victory. The Blue Wave kept rolling as they throttled the Saint Joseph Crusaders in a 31-7 win on Saint Josephs' own turf.
On October 6th on a brisk Thursday night in Danbury, the Wave shut down the Hatters by just three points in a 24-21 victory despite their lead running back James Harrington's predictions. The Blue Wave faced off against Trumbull in a FCIAC championship rematch at DHS on Saturday, October 15th with a 21-0 shutout against the mighty Eagles. In a recent match-up the Darien Wave narrowly beat the Wilton Wreckers on Saturday, October 22 in an overtime battle and came out with a 35-34 win.
With this kind of momentum, the Blue Wave should be able to crash over upcoming opponents such as Staples High School and Trinity Catholic. "Our young and inexperienced players have grown up quickly and responded to the challenge of varsity football" Coach Trifone said. Many are skeptical of the Blue Wave being able to keep such a momentous run, but it is without a doubt that the team is dressed to impress as they show no sign in slowing down.
