Juniors Get a Chance to Drive to School

One of the longest awaited privileges that Darien High School seniors receive is being allowed to park at school. This year there will be an opportunity for one lucky junior to drive to school. The Junior Class officers have decided to supply a spot around the oval for one junior to drive to school second semester.

“It is a good and fun way to fundraise for the junior class,” said Junior Class Advisor and social studies teacher, Ms. Lynn Brown. All juniors will be given the opportunity to purchase a drawing ticket for a spot in the student parking lot.

Not all juniors are enthused about the possibility of driving to school because some seniors are upset by this proposition.  “We were not given this so why do the juniors now get a chance to park at school?” said senior Hannah Halstrom.
All juniors will be able to buy a drawing ticket during lunch the week of December 12th for $5 or three tickets for $10. The drawing will be done two weeks before Christmas to give the winning junior his or her chance to park for the second semester. “I think that the money should go to the senior class because they are our parking spots” said senior Caroline Kearney. Most seniors aren’t happy with this fundraising idea because they think that the money that is raised should either go to the school or to the senior class. Seniors pay $100 for their parking spots at the beginning of the year, so many seniors do not think that it is fair that the money does not go to their own class funds.

Within the past year, DHS has been making substantial cuts to the budget, but with new fundraising ideas the junior class hopes to raise money to help with their future events. “We have a lot of ideas like we are contacting Ford to have a drive to school fundraiser” said Ms. Brown. The faculty approved that one junior can park around the oval but Ms. Brown has high hopes for next year, “We think that most juniors will buy tickets and we hope that next year we can get more spots to drawing off.” “I don’t even have a car” said junior Nick Howe. Howe thinks that it is a “cool way of fundraising” but does not think that the idea gives equal opportunities for all juniors. Not all juniors can legally get their licenses and thus are not given the chance to participate in the drawing. In fact, some seniors have not even gotten their licenses yet.

Seniors complain that they had to pay $100 dollars for their parking spots. “I think seniors may be unhappy but it also depends who the junior is” said junior Althea Perley. Regardless of senior opinions the drawing will happen two weeks before Christmas Vacation so they can drive second semester.
