MISS MEGAN SAPETA, ONE OF DARIEN HIGH SCHOOL’S
three librarians, is new to DHS this year.  I recently sat down and asked her some questions about her thoughts and goals for our library.

What kinds of things are you in charge of in the library?
I help students as much as I can, and monitor computers to make sure they are working rather than playing games.

What do you like and dislike about DHS?
I love that the library is actually used.  There are always lots of students in here, which makes my days pretty fun!  The only thing I can complain about is that my desk is in the back of the library compared to being out towards the front.

What school did you work at before this job and what did you do there?
I worked at Walden School Boces in Westchester County, New York.  It was a lot different than DHS, because it was a special education school for children who are emotionally disturbed.  It was K-10, so the kids were younger.  My job was really interactive and I did things like read stories to the students or make displays for them.

What qualifications did you need for this job?  What college did you go to and what did you major in?
I got my undergraduate degree in communications and my masters in library and information science at Long Island University.

Where did you grow up?  Was it like DHS?  Where do you live now?
I lived in Cold Spring, New York, which is a very small town, smaller than Darien!  There was one stoplight, and grades K-12 had only a total (!) of 500 kids.  We all went to school together in one building.  Now I live in Stamford, so I’m very close to work, which I love.

What are your goals for the DHS Library?
I hope to connect with as many students as possible, and really get to know them this year.

Are you satisfied with the library and how students use it?  Are there things that you are unhappy about?
I’m very happy because I think that the library is used in all the right ways.  There are times when it gets pretty loud, but students are good about getting quiet once told to do so.

What is your favorite thing to read?
My favorite things to read are newspapers and magazines because I love keeping up with current events.  As for books, I’m split between fiction and nonfiction.  I love when people suggest books to me.  With my busy schedule, it’s hard to find time to read for pleasure, but I definitely enjoy recommendations.

What top five romantic novels do you suggest students read to get into the Valentine’s Day vibe?

Love Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
In this book, it’s really cool how all the character’s lives are intertwined and their fate predicts everything.
The Princess Bride by William Goldman
This is one of my favorites, and is also a movie.
Princess
 The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks
The book is a little different than the movie, but this classic love story is a must read.
Notebook
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
This book is a good romantic read for boys.  The modern Bridget Jones’s Diary is a reflection of this story.  Even though it was written a very long time ago, it still applies today and is a wonderful story.
About a boyHigh High Fidelity and About a Boy by Nick Hornby
Boys would enjoy this British author because the main characters are men who deal with girlfriend issues in some humorous ways.
