Dear Parents,
The School Wide Enrichment committee welcomes everyone back to another exciting year at Ox Ridge. This year our school wide theme is Math in Our World! You may not realize it but math is everywhere! You are using math each time you set the alarm, buy groceries, keep score or time at an athletic event, mix a baby’s formula or even wrap a present. Let’s look around, start talking about math and encourage our children to think of themselves as mathematicians who can reason and solve problems in their daily lives.
On October 20th, we will start our math year off with an exciting assembly program featuring the Arithmetickles. This fun filled math program provides examples of how to use textbook math in everyday situations. The children will be asked to join in, help solve problems and play fun math games.
In November, we will have “Math in the Morning” to get the day started. Each grade will have a chance to come to the Common Room and play games with their parents and friends. We will have old favorites like Yahtzee, Othello, Uno and Connect Four and some exciting new favorites for everyone to try.
Math is present in our world all the time, in the workplace, in our homes, and in life in general. This spring we will ask for parent volunteers to come speak to the kids about how they use math in their daily lives. If you think you might be interested in sharing how you use math, let us know. Finally, at the end of the year we will have a surprise visitor come and speak to the kids about his job and how math affects everything he does. More information on this exciting visitor will follow!
We hope you find the websites and books we have listed enjoyable. We welcome any thoughts or questions you may have concerning the enrichment program and we look forward to a math filled year!
Sincerely Yours,
Kristin Collier
