Memorializing Andrew Jackson: Does he belong on the $20?

Andrew Jackson is one of the more controversial Presidents. The controversy extends past the policies that defined his presidency or the events that defined his personality and character. The controversy of Andrew Jackson extends to the way that the nation remembers him; by memorializing him on a piece of national currency – the $20 bill.

The question remains: Does he belong there? As a class we have read about the policies that he passed while he was president. We have discussed his role in the War of 1812. We have taken a close look at the colorful events that defined him as an individual. Now it is time for you to answer the question:

Does Andrew Jackson deserve to be on the $20 bill?

In answering this question you should consider the conversation we had in class on Thursday: What is more important when considering a president? The action he took while he was in office or the kind of man he was? Think carefully about Andrew Jackson before you answer the question.

The task: Due on Thursday, January 10th

You will need to write a well developed essay to answer the question posed above. Your essay should include examples from both the PowerPoint reviewed in class, the reading on Andrew Jackson, and the reading on the Trail of Tears.

Your essay should be approximately two pages typed double spaced.

The essay should include a developed thesis that is maintained throughout the entirety of the paper. You should have at least three main ideas about Andrew Jackson included in your thesis that plan to cover in the essay.

Your paper should start with an introduction and wrap up with a concluding paragraph that does not include the words “In conclusion…”
