This week’s assignments

November 3rd, 2008

FOR TUES: No School!

FOR WED: Final Character Sketch due.  Must be typed & double-spaced.  Your grade will be based on:

  1. the overall development of your character (ideas)
  2. using descriptive & specific word choices
  3. organizing your thoughts into at least 3 paragraphs
  4. editing carefully, and
  5. following all directions throughout the assignment.

FOR FRI: Finish your books!  Respond to the book with both the Dailies sheet and a Mind Map Reading Log.  Add words to your list that are new/unique/interesting.  IF YOU WISH, YOU MAY BRING A SMALL FOOD ITEM TO SHARE WITH YOUR GROUP.  YOUR FOOD ITEM MUST CONNECT IN SOME WAY TO YOUR BOOK.(:

Book Clubs & Character Piece

October 30th, 2008

1. We meet in book clubs tomorrow, so be prepared.

2. A first, completed draft of your character sketch should be ready to share in revision groups on Monday.  It can be in your writer’s notebook or on a separate piece of paper.  Here are some do’s:

  • DO include varied details about your character including, but not limited to, appearance, actions, thoughts, words, feelings, dreams, fears, obstacles, quirks, background,  etc.
  • Do SHOW these qualities rather than TELL the reader about them.
  • DO write in 3rd person (s/he) , not in 1st person (I)
  • DO use complete sentences/paragraphs.  The end product should be at least three paragraphs, so the more you can write now the better.
  • DO write about the character (like a biography, but with a lot more detail)–this should not be a story about your character, rather focus on the character and what s/he is all about only.
