Health Screenings
The School Nurses in Darien Public Schools perform health screenings based on recommendations from the Connecticut State Department of Education and in compliance with the Connecticut State Statutes and Regulations.
Annually students are screened for vision, hearing and postural problems in the following grades:
Vision by Snellen Chart or equivalent:
Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 4th & 5th grade
Hearing by Puretone Audiometer:
Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 4th & 5th grade
Posture by visual inspection
- Females 5th & 7th grades
- Males 8th grade
If the results of the screening tests indicate further evaluation is needed the school will notify the parent/guardian and recommend further medical evaluation of the suspected problem.
If the nurse is unable to test a student the parent/guardian will be notified.
If a parent/guardian does not want a student to participate in any of the screenings they should notify the school nurse in writing.
Screenings that are documented on a Physical Examination form that was performed during the current school year and submitted to the school nurse will be considered valid for the screening purposes for that year.
