Health Screenings

Darien Public School Nurses perform health screenings based on recommendations from the Connecticut State Department of Education and in compliance with the Connecticut State Statutes and Regulations.

Students are screened annually for vision, hearing and postural problems in the following grades:

Vision Screening: Spot Vision Screener, Snellen Chart or equivalent:

Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 4th & 5th grade

Hearing Screening: OAE Screener, Puretone Audiometer or equivalent:

Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 4th & 5th grade

Postural Screening: Visual Inspection

Females 5th & 7th grades

Males 8th grade

*Please note: The parent/guardian will be notified by the school nurse if screening results indicate further evaluation by a medical provider or if the school nurse is unable to test a student. Any parent/guardian who chooses to opt out of the state mandated screening, must notify school nurse in writing. Screenings that are documented on a Physical Examination form that was performed during the current school year and submitted to the school nurse will be considered valid for the screening purposes for that year.
