Health Screenings

Health Screenings by Darien Public School Nurses
Darien Public School nurses conduct health screenings in accordance with recommendations from the Connecticut State Department of Education and in compliance with Connecticut State Statutes and Regulations.

Students are screened annually for vision, hearing, and postural concerns in the following grades:

Vision Screening (using Spot Vision Screener, Snellen Chart, or equivalent):

• Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade

Hearing Screening (using OAE Screener, Puretone Audiometer, or equivalent):

• Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade

Postural Screening (visual inspection):

• Females: 5th & 7th grade /  Males: 8th grade

 

Important Notes:
Parents/guardians will be notified if screening results indicate a need for further evaluation by a medical provider or if a screening could not be completed. Parents/guardians who wish to opt out of state-mandated screenings must provide written notification to the school nurse.  Screenings conducted during the current school year and documented on a Health Assessment Record submitted to the school nurse are considered valid for that year.
