Health Screenings

Darien Public School Nurses perform health screenings based on recommendations from the Connecticut State Department of Education and in compliance with the Connecticut State Statutes and Regulations.

Students are screened annually for vision, hearing and postural problems in the following grades:

Vision Screening: Spot Vision Screener, Snellen Chart or equivalent:

Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 4th & 5th grade

Hearing Screening: OAE Screener, Puretone Audiometer or equivalent:

Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 4th & 5th grade

Postural Screening: Visual Inspection

Females 5th & 7th grades

Males 8th grade

*Please note: The school nurse will notify the parent/guardian if screening results indicate a need for further evaluation by a medical provider or if the nurse is unable to complete the screening. Parents/guardians who wish to opt out of the state-mandated screening must provide written notification to the school nurse. Screenings conducted during the current school year and documented on a Health Assessment Record submitted to the school nurse will be considered valid for that year.
