Placement Information

English 8 Advanced

All students in grade 7 have access to our grade-8 advanced course, English 8 Advanced. Currently, students are placed in this course if they meet two out of three of the following criteria:

  • an 82 or higher on the Degrees of Reading Power (DRP) assessment administered to all grade-7 students in the fall,
  • a 75% or higher on the benchmark essay assessment administered to all grade-7 students in January,
  • a half-year grade in English 7 of an A- or higher.

Students who do not place into the course initially may still access it through the waiver process, provided they meet the waiver deadline.


English 9 Accelerated

All students in grade 8 have access to our grade-9 advanced course, English 9 Accelerated. Currently, students are placed in this course if they meet two out of three of the following criteria:

  • an 82 or higher on the Degrees of Reading Power (DRP) assessment administered to all grade-8 students in the fall,
  • a 75% or higher on the benchmark essay assessment administered to all grade-8 students in January,
  • a half-year grade in English 8 of an A- or higher; a half-year grade in English 8 Advanced of a B+ or higher.

Students who do not place into the course initially may still access it through the waiver process, provided they meet the waiver deadline.


English 10 Honors

FOR STUDENTS IN ENGLISH 9: Students in English 9 are automatically placed in English 10 Honors if they meet the following three criteria:

  • an A- or higher on their Semester 1 grade in English 9,
  • an A on their Semester 1 midterm exam in English 9,
  • a recommendation for the course from their English 9 teacher.

English 9 students who do not place into the course through this process may still access it through the waiver process, provided they meet the waiver deadline.

FOR STUDENTS IN ENGLISH 9 ACCELERATED: Students in English 9 Accelerated are automatically placed in English 10 Honors if they maintain a B- average or higher throughout the year.


AP English Language and Composition: American Literature (Grade 11)

FOR STUDENTS IN ENGLISH 10: Students in English 9 are automatically placed in AP Lang 11 if they meet the following three criteria:

  • an A- or higher on their Semester 1 grade in English 10,
  • an A on their Semester 1 midterm exam in English 10,
  • a recommendation for the course from their English 10 teacher.

English 10 students who do not place into the course through this process may still access it through the waiver process, provided they meet the waiver deadline.

FOR STUDENTS IN ENGLISH 10 HONORS: Students in English 10 Honors are automatically placed in AP Lang 11 if they maintain a B- average or higher throughout the year.


AP English Language and Composition: Postmodern Voices (Grade 12)

FOR STUDENTS IN AMERICAN LITERATURE: Students in American Literature (whether in an American Studies section or in a stand-alone section) can request placement in AP Lang 12 if they maintain a B+ or higher in American Literature throughout the year. They can also request placement in AP Lit 12, but only after meeting about it with the department chair.


AP English Literature and Composition (Grade 12)

FOR STUDENTS IN AMERICAN LITERATURE: Students in American Literature (whether in an American Studies section or in a stand-alone section) can request placement in AP Lit 12 if (a) they maintain a B+ or higher in American Literature throughout the year, and (b) they arrange to discuss this request with the English department chair.

FOR STUDENTS IN AP LANG 11: Students in AP Lang 11 are automatically eligible for enrollment in AP Lit 12 if they maintain a B- average or higher throughout the year.
