AI

As a department we are not opposed to thoughtful and deliberate use of apps, programs and calculators to support student understanding of mathematics and problem solving.  However, the mindfulness about the way students use it is essential.

At this time not all math AI is good at logical, step by step reasoning.  Often math problems are completed in a way that is different than what is demonstrated in the classroom which can actually confuse students more. With that said, there are times when students are "stuck" with the process of solving a problem and it can be a helpful tool.

Bottom line- Ideally we want students to refer to their meaningful notes from class and/or use teacher solutions if offered.  Math AI can be an additional useful tool to help solve problems. If students are using math AI to simply copy the work, that becomes an academic integrity issue.
