Course Placement Waivers

The Mathematics Department's course placement recommendations are based on multiple measures and are designed to place students in courses where they are most likely to be successful and continue to grow as mathematical thinkers.

In some circumstances, students and families may request placement in a mathematics course without meeting the department's recommended prerequisites by submitting a course placement waiver. Students choosing to waive into a course should carefully consider the pace, rigor, and prerequisite knowledge required for success.

Students approved through the waiver process are expected to complete the required Summer Mathematics Practice before the start of the school year. Summer practice assignments are available on the Summer Practice page of this website.

Darien High School (Grades 9–12)

At Darien High School, students may request placement into any mathematics course by submitting the appropriate waiver form. While waivers provide access to a course, they do not change the course expectations or level of rigor. Families are encouraged to carefully review the course description and prerequisites before submitting a request. Students should work with their school counselor to understand waiver windows, deadlines, and the course selection process.

Students interested in pursuing a placement waiver should begin by meeting with their school counselor. After reviewing the student's course recommendation and discussing available options, the counselor will provide the appropriate waiver form.

Grade 8 to Grade 9 Course Placement

Students transitioning from Middlesex Middle School to Darien High School who wish to request placement outside of the department's recommendation may complete the appropriate waiver form below.

Summer Math Practice

Students who enroll in a course through the waiver process are required to complete the assigned summer mathematics practice before the beginning of the school year.
