Course Progression Flowchart

This flowchart illustrates the typical mathematics pathways available to students in Grades 6–12. Student placement is determined annually using multiple measures, including classroom performance, teacher recommendations, and district placement criteria. While the chart shows common pathways, individual student schedules may vary.

  • Solid arrows = Typical progression
  • Dashed arrows = Alternative pathway
  • Pink Trapeziods = Elective or optional course
  • A – Above Grade Level (Middle School Accelerated)
  • 300 – College Preparatory
  • 400 = Honors Level
  • AP – Advanced Placement (College-Level Coursework)

Comprehensive mathematics pathways are also available for students whose learning needs are best served through an integrated or individualized sequence. Families with questions about these options are encouraged to contact the Special Education Department or their school counselor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my child accelerate later?

Yes. Students are reviewed each year for course placement using multiple measures, including classroom performance, teacher recommendations, assessment data, and district placement criteria. Placement is designed to match each student's readiness, and students may have opportunities to move into a more accelerated pathway when they demonstrate the necessary preparation.

Is Honors required before taking an AP mathematics course?

It depends on the AP course.

Students who plan to pursue AP Calculus BC are strongly encouraged to follow the Honors mathematics pathway, as it provides the depth, pace, and preparation needed for success in this highly rigorous course.

For AP Calculus AB and AP Statistics, students may come from different mathematics pathways. Placement into these courses is based on successful completion of prerequisite coursework and demonstrated readiness.

Families with questions about the pathway that best aligns with their child's goals are encouraged to speak with their child's teacher, school counselor, or school administrator.

What if my child transfers into the district?

Students transferring into the district are placed individually based on their previous coursework, transcripts, available assessment information, and other relevant academic records. When additional information is needed to determine the most appropriate placement, students may be asked to complete a mathematics placement assessment.

The Mathematics Department works closely with school counselors to ensure that each student is placed in the course that best matches their background, readiness, and educational goals.

Are there multiple routes to Calculus?

Yes. Students may reach Calculus through more than one pathway. While some students follow an accelerated sequence that allows them to take Calculus earlier, others follow the traditional progression and are equally well prepared for college-level mathematics.
