As students transition from elementary to middle school, Darien Public Schools is committed to placing each student in the mathematics course that provides the appropriate balance of challenge, support, and opportunity for growth.

Placement decisions are based on multiple measures of student readiness and the professional judgment of educators who know each child well. Every pathway is designed to help students build confidence, deepen mathematical understanding, and prepare for future success.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my child move to a different course later?

Yes. Students may move between mathematics pathways during middle school as they demonstrate sustained readiness through classroom performance and teacher recommendation. While movement between pathways is possible, it is based on demonstrated success over time rather than a single assessment or request.

Can I request a different placement?

Families are encouraged to speak with their child's teacher to better understand the placement recommendation and the criteria used in the decision-making process. Recommendations are based on multiple measures of readiness and the professional judgment of educators rather than a single assessment, parent request, or student preference.

What is a waiver?

If your child is recommended for 6th Grade Math (grade-level mathematics) but your family prefers that they begin in the accelerated pathway, you may choose to complete a placement waiver. The waiver is available on the Waiver page of this website. Please note that students who waive into the accelerated pathway are required to complete summer coursework and must maintain a B– or higher to remain in the accelerated course.

Will placement affect my child's future opportunities?

No. Every mathematics pathway is designed to prepare students for future success. Although students who demonstrate sustained readiness may have opportunities to move between pathways during middle school, this is relatively uncommon. Most students remain in the pathway recommended at the time of placement and continue to experience rigorous mathematical learning.

Can my child take a summer course to accelerate into a higher mathematics pathway?

No. Darien Public Schools does not use outside coursework, tutoring programs, or summer mathematics courses as the basis for accelerating a student's mathematics placement.

Placement decisions are based on a comprehensive review of each student's demonstrated readiness over time, including classroom performance, district assessments, mathematical reasoning, and teacher recommendation. Because placement reflects a student's sustained performance in the district's mathematics program, participation in an outside enrichment program or completion of a summer course does not change a student's placement recommendation.
