As students transition from middle school to high school, Darien Public Schools is committed to placing each student in the mathematics course that provides the appropriate balance of challenge, support, and opportunity for growth. Placement decisions are based on multiple measures of readiness and the professional judgment of educators who know each student well. Every mathematics pathway is designed to prepare students for success in high school and beyond.

Understanding High School Mathematics Levels

Unlike middle school, where students may follow several different mathematics pathways, Darien High School mathematics courses are generally offered at three levels:

High School Math Pathways

Students may move between pathways as they progress through high school based on demonstrated success, course prerequisites, and teacher recommendation. The pathways shown below represent the most common course sequences; individual student pathways may vary.

How Course Recommendations Are Made

Students earning a C or lower are typically recommended to repeat the course to strengthen their mathematical foundation before advancing.

Students who successfully complete a course are generally recommended for the next course in the sequence.

Placement into Honors (400) courses is based on meeting the published minimum prerequisite grade established by the Mathematics Department.

Opportunities Beyond the Classroom

Meaningful mathematical growth also comes from solving rich problems, participating in competitions, working collaboratively with peers, and applying mathematics to real-world situations. Many students find that math clubs and competitions provide an excellent complement to their mathematics courses.

Opportunities at DHS:

Math Team –Develop problem-solving skills through local and regional competitions. No prior competition experience is required.

Math Modeling Club – Use mathematics to solve authentic, real-world problems.

Mu Alpha Theta – The National Mathematics Honor Society recognizes mathematical achievement and provides opportunities for enrichment, competitions, leadership, and community outreach.

Common Misconceptions

MYTH Honors is always the best choice.

REALITY The best choice is the course where a student will be challenged and successful.

MYTH Taking the highest pathway guarantees better college admissions.

REALITY Colleges value students who pursue rigorous coursework appropriate to their readiness and are successful in those courses.

MYTH Statistics replaces Algebra/Calculus.

REALITY Statistics complements the algebra/calculus sequence but serves a different purpose.

MYTH Summer courses or enrichment sites can replace DHS courses.

REALITY NON DHS coursework DOES not replace DHS course prerequisites for advancement.

MYTH Students who begin in the Double Accelerated Pathway should remain there throughout high school.

REALITY The Double Accelerated Pathway is designed for a small group of students pursuing the district's most advanced mathematics sequence. As students progress through high school, many choose a different pathway that better aligns with their academic goals, interests, or overall course load. Changing pathways is a common and appropriate decision.
