our standards of instruction

The Connecticut Department of Education has adopted the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Standards for World Language Education as our state standards. ACTFL has been dedicated to the improvement and expansion of the teaching and learning of all languages at all levels of instruction since its founding in 1967. ACTFL is an individual membership organization of more than 12,500 language educators and administrators from elementary through graduate education, as well as government and industry. ACTFL and it's standards are synonymous with innovation, quality, and reliability in meeting the changing needs of language educators and their students. Because the ACTFL Standards are also aligned with Common Core State Standards, the World Language Department of the Darien Public Schools advocates for and adheres to these standards when designing our curricula and teaching our students.

The world language teachers in the Darien Public Schools also work in conjunction with the Connecticut Organization of Language Teachers (COLT). COLT advocates for world language learning for all students at all grade levels, and supports teacher and student activities that demonstrate language teaching and learning. COLT is affiliated with ACTFL and provides professional learning opportunities at the state level for teachers to become versed on standards for world language instruction.
